What to Expect

To the south of the province of Veraguas is the Gulf of Montijo Wetland, a perfect destination for ecotourism and to observe in action this wetland that serves as a protection barrier for communities on the mainland.
Wetland Gulf of Montijo is an ecosystem of international importance, which has been declared a RAMSAR site, where you can closely observe the flora and fauna, explore the vegetation spot various species of birds, mainly parrots, falcons and parrots, among others.
In the rivers San Pedro and San Pablo, as well as the other tributaries that make up the Gulf of Montijo, they are framed in an imposing intense green landscape that produces a sensation of pleasure, drunkenness and tranquility. There you can enjoy and surprise with alligators moving freely or resting in their environment.
The islands that we visit are a separate spectacle, with dream scenarios, deserted beaches of white sand, reefs of multicolored corals and a rich marine fauna. An unforgettable visit is the island of Coiba, with its landscapes of incomparable beauty.
There are numerous activities that you can practice enjoying nature and its gifts, such as diving, sport fishing, dolphin and whale watching. Even if you are not an expert in water sports, do not forget to try an excursion of underwater discovery with snorkel, it is simple and you can observe very closely the different species that inhabit these cristal waters.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Cebaco and Santa Catalina

Our adventure begins in Mutis Port around 24 km south of the city of Santiago de Veraguas, where we board one of our boats and sail along the waters of the San Pedro River, a journey of about 30 minutes where we will cross its brackish waters, we will find lush mangrove forests and wildlife. When we are passing through the Lions Island, we will be in the center of Gulf of Montijo where more than 10 tributaries join the Pacific Ocean. Touching the sea we will be crossing farther south for 30 minutes more, at that time we will have in front the Cébaco Island and Gobernadora Island which are the perfect place to escape the world and enjoy the incredible din that the silence of nature can give you. Cébaco is a peaceful place with quiet people, and kilometers of unspoiled beaches.
Only on the island you will be close to so many different beaches, between calm and strong waves (2m.) perfect for surfing. We will enjoy of the turquoise water and white sand all day, in that place we will prepare a delicious barbecue.
In the afternoon, we board towards Santa Catalina town, famous for its waves, the scene of many international surfing championships. In addition to the waves, Santa Catalina is a very picturesque town, a melting pot of many nationalities and cultures, where our palate can find flavors from all corners of the world. After enjoying a delicious dinner, we have some rest to charge energy for the next day.

Day 2Canales de Afuera Island, Rancheria Island, Coiba Island, Granito de Oro Island

Very early after breakfast, we direct our compass to the Coiba National Park, in a few minutes we will see how the water color is changing indicating that we are entering the park. This is a world heritage reserve that protects marine, island and coastal ecosystems; it has an approximate area of 270 thousand hectares.
The first island we will visit is Canales de Afuera, here we can enjoy of a tiny beach and a large place to snorkel for those who want to practice it, we’ll only be an hour here and then move to the majestic Rancheria Island, also known as Coibita, in my opinion the most beautiful beach in the whole park, in the middle of this paradise we’ll grab our lunch.
Five minute in boat is the largest island of the park which bears his name, as a curious fact about 80% of the island is covered with primary forests, without being affected by humans and home to many unique species in the world.
Our last stop, inside the park, will be Granito de Oro Island, the jewel in the crown, an indescribable and amazing place, just a few minutes snorkeling and we can see many colorful fish, sea turtles and hopefully many more.
At around 3:00 pm we will begin our return to Santa Catalina, where we can enjoy of a beautiful sunset (if weather allows); once in land again, we can get relaxed, enjoy dinner and share stories with the rest of the group.

Day 3Come Back Home

Our last day will be more flexible for getting back to Mutis Port, as optional stop, we can stop in Leones Island (previous reservation) where we enjoy an amazing seafood bed, which includes lobster, fried fish, coconut rice, patacones (fried plantains) and black shells.
In the afternoon, we will be landing in our port of departure.
