Green Island (Isla Verde) – Gulf of Montijo

It is a small island located at the end of the mangroves and the mouth of the San Pedro River, in the Gulf of Montijo, province of Veraguas. This is a place of great natural and ecological beauty where you can see a variety of birds characteristic of the area.

On this island, you will find mangrove areas magnificent for kayaking.

The island has a dense mangrove cover over more than 80% of its surface, with places where you can enter with kayaks through marine trails with calm waters that will allow you to enjoy the wildlife and the plants in the mangroves.

In both the northern and southern parts of the island, there are several fishing spots.

History

Legend says that a hermit who lived alone on this island for more than 50 years, estranged from the rest of civilization.
The hermit as the fishermen who sporadically came to camp in Isla Verde called him ate what little he produced: rice, cassava, some fruits such as pineapple, coconut, and others that exist in this part of the Gulf.
The hermit moved to this place for reasons that are still unknown even to his own family. The place where he lived was like a cave that he improvised with a few sheets of zinc and small trees he found when he started living in this remote place. To get in or out of his home he had to drag himself.
The door to the hermit´s house was a maze that only he could access. Inside there was only one pot with pieces of cooked cassava with coconut, and a small space with two sticks that served as his bed at night.
